Transforming Vacant Brownfield Properties Panel Discussion
The Maryland Department of Planning hosted a panel discussion—Transforming Vacant Brownfield Properties—at the Maryland Municipal League's Summer 2022 Conference in Ocean City, MD on June 13, 2022. The panel was described to conference attendees as follows: “Interested in learning how to transform vacant brownfield properties into new economic drivers or new recreational amenities? Staff from the Maryland Department of Planning Brownfield Redevelopment Assistance Program will discuss technical and financial assistance opportunities at the state and federal level and will lead a panel discussion of government, private and nonprofit brownfield experts. Bring information to the session regarding local brownfield redevelopment priorities to receive initial site-specific guidance.” Our panelists included Barbara H. Brown, Voluntary Cleanup Program Section Head for the Land and Materials Administration within the Maryland Department of the Environment; and Katie See, Brownfields Redevelopment Specialist with the West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center at West Virginia University, which also serves as the Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) provider for EPA's Region 3. The Maryland Department of Planning provided an introduction, which can be viewed in the slides below; and Barbara and Katie provided informative responses to site-specific brownfield questions from attendees, including those from Annapolis, Chesapeake Beach, Cottage City, Mountain Lake Park, and Seat Pleasant. Barbara and Katie's responses to several pre-designed brownfield questions are also included below.
