Sustainable Growth Network (SGN) Purpose and Guidelines
Purpose
The Sustainable Growth Network (SGN) serves as a collaborative forum committed to advancing sustainable growth policy and practice in Maryland as defined by the Sustainable Growth Policy and Planning Principles contained in State Procurement and Land Use code, as adopted at the 2025 MGA legislative session.
Objectives
- Advance best practices in sustainable growth policy and practice
- Engage expertise from across the state to share ideas and methods
- Provide feedback to MDP (and other agencies) on policy, programs or other relevant initiatives
Participants
SGN’s network includes a balanced representation of land use planning related public and private sector practitioners, public policy makers, and nonprofit organizations or other institutions with missions related to sustainable growth. More than one person representing any organization or entity should provide comments as a singular representative voice. Participation is open to those who are respectful, balanced and value inclusive dialog on sustainable growth-related topics.
Structure of Meetings
The Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) will host and facilitate meetings to ensure participant time is well-utilized and contributions are valued. SGN will meet quarterly, with a blend of in-person and virtual formats. Anyone that is committed to the purpose and objectives is welcome and must register in advance to receive a meeting link or be added to building entry lists.
Communication and Resources
- All meeting materials and resources will be shared through a MS Teams folder with continuously active participants.
- Members will be encouraged to share relevant articles, research, and best practices.
- MDP will reserve the right to review or remove material that is not directly relevant or inappropriate to the effectiveness of the SGN.
- Persons expressing interest but not available for ongoing, active engagement and contributions to the purpose will be able to access resources on the MDP web site.
Measuring Success
Success will be measured by the continuous participation of members and level of active engagement through sharing of case studies, articles, resources and other methods that may support the advancement of sustainable growth policy and practice.
