According to
MDE’s Cleanup Standards for Soil and Groundwater October 2018 Interim Final Guidance, there are several sets of soil cleanup requirements based on different land use scenarios, i.e. residential use, recreational use, and non-residential use (commercial, industrial, manufacturing, etc.). The different cleanup standards are calculated based on the types and frequency of direct and indirect exposure to the soil that someone is likely to have under the different land use scenarios. For example, on a residential property, it may be assumed that a resident could have up to eight hours a day of direct contact with the soil; whereas, on a non-residential property, it may be assumed that a person would not have more than one hour per day of direct contact with the soil. Therefore, MDE developed a Residential Use Soil Cleanup Requirement, Recreational Use Soil Cleanup Requirements, Mixed Use (Commercial/Residential) Soil Cleanup Minimum Requirements, and Commercial and Industrial Use Soil Cleanup Requirements, to address the different exposure scenarios under the various types of land use. The soil cleanup requirements are designed to be protective of human health, within the constraints of current knowledge.
