2020 Statewide Land Use Map Update Project

The Maryland Department of Planning is starting a 2020 update to its statewide Land Use (formerly “Land Use Land Cover") GIS product. The 2020 Land Use Map is envisioned to show generalized locations of developed land, including varying densities of residential land as well as commercial, industrial, institutional, other developed, and undeveloped resource land. Previous versions of the map have been used by the Maryland Department of Planning and other public and private stakeholders to support various planning efforts.

Planning is seeking to engage local government and private sector GIS professionals and consultants who are current or prospective users of the Maryland Department of Planning’s Land Use maps in the planning process for this update project. A webinar was held on May 12, 2020, which gave a broad overview of the proposed 2020 update process including potential changes to the product’s format and methodology.

To make the tool as useful as possible and reduce redundant efforts, Planning also seeks information about stakeholders’ use of the map and supplemental data sources that may either support map development or be used in conjunction with the map. To provide your input into this project, please participate in our brief 2020 Statewide Land Use Map Update questionnaire.
