* PFA boundaries have since changed in several jurisdictions.

Note on PFA Boundaries

The Decennial Census demographic and socioeconomic profile reports are for Priority Funding Areas (PFAs) boundaries as they existed in 2001* and include PFA Comment Areas. PFA Comment Areas are certified by the county as part of it's Priority Funding Areas but do not meet the criteria in the 1997 Law for PFAs. This means that if a proposed project is in a comment area, we recommend that other state agencies do not fund the project and it goes before the Growth Commission for special approval. To determine the most accurate and current PFAs for jurisdictions click on Priority Funding Areas Mapping to Create PFA Maps Online.

Tracking Residential Growth Inside and Outside of PFAs 1940 to 2007

You hear a lot about sprawl development and the need to redirect investment to established communities and designated growth areas served by public utilities. The Maryland Department of Planning has data that illustrates important trends in growth patterns. How many houses are located inside of Priority Funding Areas - the places where growth is supposed to go - and how much land do they consume? Conversely, how many houses are located outside of Priority Funding Areas - places dedicated largely to agricultural preservation and resource conservation - and how much land do they consume?
