American Community Survey

The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing, nationwide, monthly survey covering approximately three-million households each year and is now the source for all socioeconomic data. Prior to Census 2010, socioeconomic data were collected by the 10-year Census in what was known as its long-form questionnaire. ACS data are currently available for two types of releases depending on population size: annual and five-year periods. (Note: 3-year ACS Estimates were discontinued following the release of the 2009-2012 ACS Estimates). Annual ACS data are avaiable for all geographies (U.S., states, counties, and places) with a minimum population of 65,000. The 5-year ACS estimates have no population size restriction; these estimates are available for all geographies down to census tracts and block groups. The ACS 5-year Estimates are described as a composite of 5 years (60 months) of data while the one-year or Annual ACS Estimates are a composite of 12 months of data.
