Jobs and Income

This section shows publicly available statistics for state and local economies. Data come from federal sources-- the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and the Census Bureau.  BEA through its Regional Data series publishes income and jobs data, annually and quarterly, for the nation,  states, regions, and counties. BLS publishes a variety of economic series that focus on jobs including the Current Employment Statistics (CES) which reports monthly, quarterly and annual employment for the nation, states and metro areas. The Census Bureau also publishes a number of economic series including County Business Patterns (CBP), released annually, which presents private sector employment at the county  and zip code geography.

In this section, annual income and jobs data are presented for Maryland and its 24 jurisdictions based on the BEA, CES, and CBP datasets. While each dataset reports jobs data, the jobs numbers are not identical due to coverage issues and methodologies. For instance, the BEA series is more comprehensive in that it includes federal military, railroad, household, agricultural, and other workers not covered by the unemployment insurance system. In addition, the BEA data includes estimates of proprietors. As a result, BEA job estimates will always be significantly higher than job estimates from the CES program.
