Interactive Maps

The Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) is upgrading our Enterprise GIS system. The data contained in our applications may be impacted.

We strive to make this a seamless transition, however, in the event you experience an issue, please report it here.

If it is true that "a picture tells a thousand words", then a map tells volumes. Maps are a universal medium for communication. People have been using maps for as long as they have wondered, "What's over there?" A map is a scaled, graphic representation of the real world and a means for conveying a lot of information geographically.

MDP has been using geographic information systems (GIS) to answer questions and formulate scenarios for close to 40 years. A GIS is simply a map. When you go to an Internet roadmap for directions, you are using a GIS. MDP is pleased to make some of our most valuable data available to the public as interactive GIS maps.

Updated Priority Funding Area Web Map

In late July, MDP released a new Priority Funding Areas map application which revised the display of Priority Funding Area (PFA) and municipality data. This resource is designed to help users identify the location of PFA’s, municipalities, and annexed properties throughout Maryland. Changes include:

  • New application framework with enhanced map drawing performance;
  • Removal of areas labeled as “Annexed but Not PFA”. These areas are now symbolized simply as not PFA;
  • Consolidated municipal and county PFA symbology;
  • Municipality layer is organized into Municipalities Detailed  and Municipalities Generalized. Generalized shows the entire municipality boundary. Detailed shows annexations as they have occurred, including the dates in which properties were annexed if a user clicks on a parcel. Users must zoom in on the map to see the detailed layer.

For questions about PFAs, please contact Joseph.Griffiths@maryland.govFor additional information on PFAs, the certification process, and criteria, please visit the Priority Funding Area web page. For information or questions on the application, please contact Scott.Hansen@maryland.gov.

Additional online mapping applications for the State are also available at the MDiMAP portal.
