The following draft purpose, corridor definition, vision statements, goals and objectives are based on the initial workshop with advisory committee members and interviews and meetings with individuals and groups who have been actively engaged in the preservation, enhancement and promotion of the National Road in Maryland.
Purpose:
A conscious attempt to organize people and communities along the National Road in Maryland in order to:
  • develop and enhance the route to attract visitors
  • increase tourism
  • improve the quality of life
The plan will serve as the basis for applying for designation as an "All-American Road" or National Scenic Byway as part of the Federal Highway Administration's National Scenic Byway Program

Corridor Definition:
Maryland's National Road corridor shall include:
  • the road itself and associated public right-of-way, including original and modified alignments over time
  • the "viewshed" (lands that can be seen from the roadway out to a maximum of two miles) and in the urban sections, the "streetscape" including those built elements and features along adjacent properties that contribute to the experience of the National Road
  • tourism-oriented destinations whose primary travel directions include travel along the National Road
